campus of Stanford University were invited one-at-a-time into a “game room,” which was
little more than a large closet containing a table and a chair and a one-way mirror on the
wall. As soon as the child was seated, Dr. Walter Mischel, a research psychologist, placed
a plate of marshmallows on the table then made each child an offer: If you will wait 20
minutes while I run an errand, you can have two marshmallows for a treat when I return.
However, if you can’t wait until I return, you can only have one marshmallow anytime
after I leave. Then he left the room...
